The project will create an image bank - dedicated to helping campaigners visually communicate climate change more effectively. Research shows that stories about climate solutions – not dry descriptions of climate science – are the best tools for building public support for mitigating climate change. Because ‘pictures paint a thousand words’, the image bank will provide a crucial ingredient for these stories.

Climate Image Bank 2015

Campaigners frequently use images to bring climate change to life. But they are

generally chosen fairly randomly - there is very little practical guidance for

communicators that is informed by research. Our project will produce the first ever

central resource – an image bank - dedicated to helping campaigners visually

communicate climate change more effectively. Research shows that stories about

climate solutions – not dry descriptions of climate science – are the best tools for

building public support for mitigating climate change. Because ‘pictures paint a

thousand words’, the image bank will provide a crucial ingredient for these stories.

Briefly describe the communication tools to be deployed:

A set of recommendations and a fully tested ‘image bank’ will equip communicators

with valuable guidance on engaging audiences using the visual medium, and amplifying

the effectiveness of their campaigns. The tool will be disseminated via the project

partners’ communication channels. GCCA’s network includes campaigners and

communicators from over 450 civil society organisations, with 1700 influencers from

various sectors directly engaged through GCCA’s ‘The Tree’. COIN’s Talking Climate

website reaches over 7000 people each month, and is the internationally recognised

‘gateway’ to climate change communication resources. We will also hold webinar

trainings on using images more effectively for climate communications.

The target audience for the image bank is climate campaigners, communicators and targeted publics.
