London's Science Museum is sponsored by three major oil companies – BP, Shell and Statoil. They are collectively responsible for around 5% of historic greenhouse gas emissions. Culture Unstained will launch a campaign to end these sponsorship deals, arguing that by promoting fossil fuel companies in this way, the museum is engaged in a form of climate denial that directly conflicts with its mission to celebrate scientific achievement. These companies use sponsorship deals with museums to boost their brands and secure support for their destructive business practices from strategically important policy-makers. By exposing the truth, one can undermine both their influence and their ‘social licence to operate’, making the transition away from fossil fuels more politically achievable. To achieve this goal, Culture Unstained will: - Submit a high-profile formal complaint targeting the sponsorship deals, developed with lawyers and submitted by a group of well-known scientists and frontline campaigners. By bringing together climate science and public policy we can deal a powerful blow to the legitimacy of the fossil fuel industry; - Secure high-profile media coverage across mainstream and science press, as well as films and image macros that maximise our social media reach; o Refer our complaint to the museum's regulators if it does not respond adequately. Culture Unstained plan to escalate this process as far as possible with the goal of catalysing much stronger ethical sponsorship policies. The ultimate goal is to end oil sponsorship, but this project will also: - Spark a high-profile debate around the acceptability of oil sponsorship and the legitimacy of the fossil fuel industry; - Undermine BP, Shell and Statoil's social licence; - Engage and mobilise new audiences in the debate, such as scientists, museum-goers and young people. Culture Unstained is a UK-based campaigns and research organisation which is playing a leading role in the international movement for Fossil Free Culture. Our work has regularly secured mainstream media coverage and is significantly shaping the debate on oil sponsorship and climate change across the cultural sector, in the UK and beyond.
